Participants in this workshop will gain a better understanding of:
  • Developmental Stages of Families
  • What Children need in blended families
  • Strategies for supporting parents and blended families
This workshop will include practical, commonsense information and strategies to help families in their new family structure. Even though 'non-traditional', diverse or unique families are more common in the US than "traditional" families, our society (and educational settings) still tends to "promote" the tradition in literature, on film, on television, and sad but true, even in early childhood settings and in school. These kinds of experiences often leave children of non-traditional families feeling that theirs is not a "real" family. As the concept of "family" evolves, we should be better prepared to work with all family structures. While this workshop will focus on the challenges of and how to support children and families in a blended family, we will be also looking at how to better support all kinds of unique families.
